John is the author of several books, including The Law Office Guide to Small Computers (Shepard's/McGraw-Hill). In 1983, John pioneered online journalism by co-founding on CompuServe the world's first daily online news service. His online "Behind the Screens" commentaries, which began a decade-long run on CompuServe in the early 1980s, made him the world's first paid blogger.

As a consultant, John helped launch and edit ZiffNet's daily news operation, forming the foundation of a service that later became one of the Internet's leading technology news providers.
